A word from Ms. Fitzgerald:
“Everyone did a great job, and just because you aren’t ‘called back’ doesn’t mean you didn’t get a part or aren’t in the chorus. Thank you to everyone; you all did a wonderful job. The unfortunate thing with casting lies in the look, chemistry and feel of the cast. If a part was not yours, it doesn’t mean you did a terrible job with your audition and should give up. Each musical is different and each has a totally different set of requirements as far as cast is concerned. Please try again next season!”

She started volunteering at Servants Heart three years ago and has enjoyed it every step of the way, helping to provide year round service for over 2,900 families.
Florence Salamone, a junior here at Southport, has been doing volunteer work at a food, clothing, and furniture pantry called Servants Heart, located in Beech Grove, Indiana. She started doing this with her church’s youth group at Arlington Avenue Baptist Church.
“It feels good to help people and make a difference in the community,” said Salamone.
Salamone helps at Servants Heart once every month in order to take turns with youth group members. At Servants Heart, Salamone stocks shelves with food, helps people load up their food in bags to take home, and brings items in that have been donated to Servants Heart.
According to the Servants Heart of Indy website, over 33 million people in the United States are at poverty level. The Servants Heart located in Beech Grove help out the residents in Beech Grove and in other residing areas. There are other pantries located in different areas.
“I want to continue to volunteer at Servants Heart. Like I said before, it feels good to make a difference in the community,” said Salamone.

My name is Savanah Scaggs and I am a junior. This post, and posts to come, will give information and tips on how to make it to college.
The whole purpose of high school is to prepare you for college, right? Well a lot of the preparation is actually up to you.
As a high school senior, you should have already taken the SAT and/or the ACT test(s), and received your scores. If you haven’t, jump on it.

According to mappingyourfuture.org, in September, you should be keeping a very close eye on your deadlines and your college fees. Be gathering your application forms from the colleges of your choice and begin asking around for letters of recommendation (For the letters of recommendation, look to your favorite teachers, administrators and people you know will both give you a good reference, and be 100 percent honest).

You should plan on attending college campus tours or take virtual tours online to see which colleges truly fit who you are. Research all of your financial aid options and apply for them.
Again, keep a close eye on your deadlines; if you’re too late, you’re too late. These are only some of the first steps to be taken to prepare for your life after high school. For further information, look for future college info posts on shsnewsbureau.com.

My hands shook and my pulse was racing. My heart was beating faster than it ever had before. “Is it hot in here or is it just me?” I thought to myself. Everyone sitting around me seemed calm, cool, and collected. The seconds that passed seemed like hours. When was my name going to be called?

I was auditioning for the 2010 fall musical, “Cinderella.” I have auditioned for every musical at Southport since I was a freshman. You’d assume that it would be easier for me by now, but here I am, still shaking. I stumble down to the front of the crowded choir room, with a chair in hand, after I hear Ms. Fitzgerald call my name.

“This is it,” I told myself. “This is what you’ve worked hard for.”

Yes, my hands were shaking more than Taiwan during an earthquake, but as I looked into the eyes of all the other students who were auditioning, I instantly felt at ease. My nerves vanished and I sang the song, “In My Own Little Corner.” I finished to the applause of all my peers. Of course as I walked back to my seat, my nerves came back to life, but I still felt great. Yes, we were all competing against each other for the roll of our dreams, but the students at Southport still support each other.

But that support isn’t only in the theatre, it’s everywhere. Athletes trying out for a varsity spot feel the same nerves that I felt while auditioning for a musical. And the athletes have that same support from their team. We are all a team at Southport High School.

Throughout my years at Southport, the theatre has been my second home. Some of my favorite memories are in the theatre. Even if I don’t get the part of Cinderella, it is still an honor to have been a part of Southport High School theatre. I have met some of my closest friends through the plays and musicals. And with the amazing direction of Ms. Whitlock and Ms. Fitzgerald, I will take the skills they’ve taught me and succeed in life. And who knows, maybe one day I will be able to say “Katcha lookin’ at me on Broadway.”

Tonight at the football game, students in yellow shirts with red buckets will be going through the stands asking for money. Do not be alarmed; they are members of the Riley Dance Marathon Committee participating in the Miracle Minute. During the last minute of half time these buckets will be going around to collect money for Riley Hospital for Children. The Miracle Minute is sponsored by the RDMC and it is the first time the collection is happening this year. Last year at one basketball game, over $400 was raised. Committee member and Morale Director, August McCleery, has the same hopes for this year.
“It would be great to make over $500. Hopefully this minute will boost the morale of the crowd and get people excited for the dance marathon,” he said.
The total amount raised will be revealed at the end of the game.
