2009-10 Points of Pride announced
At the end of the 2009-10 school year, each Perry Township principal was asked to submit a list of their school’s Points of Pride, or successes from the year. Southport principal Ms. Barbara Brouwer sent the following:
• SHS had 424 graduates in 2010…..91 more than 2009.
• Students took a total of 478 AP (Advanced Placement) Tests
• 6 students were identified by the College Board in the National Merit Program. Students are Sam Doughty, Jonathan Goodwin, Holly Hightower, Michael Samm, Daniel Smedema and Ryan Myers.
• 2 National Qualifiers, Daniel Smedema and Josh Farrow, from our Speech Team. Thanks Joe Troyer, Sara Berghoff and Mandy Cowgill.
• 9 total awards, including 4 State Champions, in the Women’s Press Club of Indiana state competition. State Champions include Clayton Leslie in Video Sports and Opinion, Emily Theis in Column Writing and Jake Downey in News Writing. Congratulations Mike Klopfenstein.
• Record number of students on the A and B honor roll from 2292 in 2005-06 to 2478 in 2009-2010.
• $22,180 raised through student efforts for Riley Children’s Hospital through the Riley Dance Marathon at Southport High School. Thanks Joe Leonard.
• Attendance rate is continuing to increase from 92.5% in 2005-06 to 94.5% in 2009-2010.
• Conference Indiana Softball Championship with an undefeated season. Congratulations Melissa Franzosi.
• Girls Track Team won the IHSAA Sectional Championship. Congratulation Nathan Fishel.
• 41 families in the Southport community received holiday food through faculty donations. Thanks SHS staff!
• The Cardinal Zone completed a three year program helping over 600 students from diverse backgrounds make connections and become involved at Southport High School. Students showed increased attendance rates, increased academic performance and decreased number of discipline referrals. Thanks Sam Hanley, Mike Klopfenstein, Mary Sims and staff members.
• Entrepreneuship Class decorated a giant spirit shoe and earned a $1000 donation to Riley Children’s Hospital. Thanks Marcy Pennington.
• White River Academic League. We were state competitors for the first time is a long time. Thanks Kristina Johnson, Brian Auger and Courtney Worley.
• 92% of the students in our building stated they had a connection with an adult in our district. Thank you faculty and staff.
